Self Evaluation
Good Aspects:
Throughout making my one-minute music video I found many
aspects went well and were able to convey what I wanted to the audience. The
overall plan of the video worked well with the song and the bands overall
aesthetics, with there being a large focus on the message of the song, which
was I found to be shown clearly. I found the animation sections clearly showed
the intertextual reference to the audience without them being forced and aided
in communicating the message of the song and video to the audience, about the
troubles of mental health. The editing was a really good part of the process as
well, with the timing of transitions and the lip-syncing being spot on. I had
filmed each shot enough times so that I was able to select the best take for
each shot, lining up the timings of each with the song so it was as I had
planned it to be, with the lip-syncing being in perfect time with the song
chosen. During the filming process I found that some of my initial shots didn’t
feel right, or didn’t convey what I wanted them to, so as I was going I adapted
the ideas quickly, to fit into something that ended up working a lot better,
albeit not perfectly as they hadn’t necessarily been thought all the way
through.
Improvements:
A couple improvements I could have made to the video making
process is understanding what I would have been capable to do with each shot
when storyboarding. To improve this next time, I will film test shots allowing
me to see if the shot has my intended effect or needs to be adapted to better
showcase what I want. This could then be applied to my story board as I will be
able to adapt what doesn’t work into something that will. When it comes to
filming, I felt that even though I filmed a couple possible shots at once, I
didn’t over-film enough on some of the better shots meaning I wasn’t able to
use them for one reason or another so when it comes to do the real thing, I
will make sure to over-film each take so that the best takes can be used
without issue. Whilst filming I didn’t really think in too much detail about
the mise-en-scene of the music video, I didn’t think too much about what I was
wearing or the lighting of the video and what kind of effect that would have on
the outcome so next time I will think in more depth what kind I mise-en-scene
would be appropriate for the video and song, and how I will be able to apply
that when it comes to filming. My other improvement is that I need to have a
proper ending to the video, and song, and not just cut off at the end rather
abruptly. I will plan my storyboard so that there is a coherent and relevant
end to the video, that brings the whole thing to a fitting end.
